Who made a difference in Australia this year? GoodWeekendMag has compiled a list of the nation’s most compelling movers and shakers across a wide range of subjects

Louie Douvis, Bloomberg, Getty. Artwork by Mark StehleIt was conceived as a special year-end treat for our readers: devote an issue to the people who stood up, and stood out, in 2019. Include a mixture of high-profile movers and shakers and others who are doing fabulous things but are not household names. Focus on the people who are making the country better, or make us feel better, or have simply pulled off something remarkable.

Then it came to pulling it together. Sixteen categories, multiple people in many of them, numerous editors, reporters, designers, facts, opinions, images … not to mention last-minute rewrites thanks to pesky breaking-news events. It’s been a white-knuckle ride, but reader, we did it. Behold, “Who Mattered: 2019”, the first of what will be an annual snapshot of the people and issues that caught our imagination in the year in question. Producing this special issue has been a whole-of-newsrooms effort: to every single person involved, my sincere thanks.
