Beachgoers have been left confused by the unusual sight of thousands of tendril-like stalks attached to shells that washed up on a three-metre column, south of Adelaide.

Attached to a cylindrical pylon about three metres long, the goose barnacles were found washed up on the beach at Horseshoe Bay on Monday, leaving many wondering what it was. "They drift out in the open water, filter feed out there, and live their lives clinging to things like logs or on submerged lines or buoys — things that are floating in the water," she said.

"That's the wonderful about things that wash up on the beach. They just give you this lovely window into the diversity of life in the ocean, which is really great," Dr King said.
