State, territory and federal government ministers will meet on Wednesday to discuss solutions to the gas crisis as they prioritise protecting local manufacturing from supply shocks.
There had been pressure on the government to enact the so-called gas trigger, put in place by the Coalition to shore up domestic fuel supply, but Nationals Leader, putting the opposition in agreement with Energy Minister Chris Bowen, who said it wasn’t a short-term measure. Resources Minister Madeleine King said she had spoken with a number of gas producers, “all of whom have undertaken to do what they can to add additional supply into the east-coast gas market during this current peak”, repeating Bowen’s mantra that nothing would be ruled in or out.
Victorian Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio said the problem was with gas exports.“Let’s be frank about this - the whole country does not have a shortage of supply of gas,” she said.
