IR laws set to be passed after Pocock comes to the party

The Labor minister said he had met with Pocock late into Saturday evening and agreed to three key concessions to land the deal. Pocock also met Prime Minister Anthony Albanese late last week over the bill.

“There are effectively three sorts of issues that have come to the fore. One is with respect to small businesses, the other is low-paid workers, and finally a concern that [Pocock] has that is outside of my portfolio, but is part of the agreement, that goes to structural issues that we can put in place to deal with people who are [in] the payment system.

Burke confirmed the lower house will sit next Saturday, rather than an extra day on Friday, to pass laws that will be amended by the Senate.Multi-employer bargaining, which allows the majority of workers across many businesses to jointly force their employers to the bargaining table, has been the major sticking point of the laws. Business groups have criticised the move to expand bargaining across employers, warning it could lead to industry-wide strikes.

“This is now a substantially different bill to the one introduced in the House of Representatives a month ago. It is better for business, better for workers and makes sure the most vulnerable in our community are no longer left behind,” he said.
