The government is being urged to step in to save Greater Manchester's green belt as a controversial plan to build 175,000 homes in the city-region is set to be approved after nearly a decade of delays. The Places for Everyone masterplan for 'housing, jobs and growth' reached a key milestone last week as the final stage of public consultation on the the joint development plan got under way.
SGMGB chair Zoe Sherlock said: "We are asking the Secretary of State to intervene in the plan because, among many other issues, over 2,000 hectares of green belt will be released on the day the plan is approved, yet Greater Manchester has sufficient brownfield land supply to exceed the government’s housing target and can to build enough homes to create the equivalent of two new boroughs in Greater Manchester without releasing any Green Belt land.
A consultation on the modifications was launched last week and will remain open until December 6. Once the consultation ends, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority will collate the responses on behalf of planning inspectors, who will review them.
