GPs have labelled a federal government crackdown on Medicare rorting as "intimidating" and "heavy-handed" for unjustly targeting doctors for treating their patients' mental and physical health problems together.
President of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of GPs Dr Harry Nespolon said the fear of being pinged by the department will stop GPs from treating patients' physical and mental health issues in one visit. “We certainly don’t want anyone defrauding Medicare and doctors who do the wrong thing should be made to pay back [dodgy claims], but there are hardworking GPs who ... are completely horrified," he said.
