A new pop-up restaurant celebrates the Bisto brand with a Wallace & Gromit-themed gravy menu, but is it really befitting of the beloved duo?

Since the release of “A Grand Day Out” in 1989, Wallace & Gromit have captured the hearts of the British nation. We’ve watched them for decades, falling in love with their Rube Goldberg inventions, their nostalgic mid-century charm, and their fingerprint-flecked faces. Wallace & Gromit are practically a national institution, ingrained in our culture. When you think of Wallace & Gromit , one foodstuff instantly springs to mind: gravy.

It’s a staple of their narratives and has inspired countless catchphrases. Think of their moon rocket, made entirely of gravy, or Wallace’s ecstatic face as he bites into a slice, exclaiming, “Cracking gravy, Gromit!” But wait, there's a twist. A recent press release announced a floating gravy restaurant in Paddington, created by Bisto to celebrate their new partnership with Wallace & Gromit. This bizarre event, open for only two days next week, will feature a full £15 gravy menu. Diners will be greeted with a gravy cocktail, followed by a Bisto-infused roast with all the trimmings. Dessert will be served with a sweet gravy sauce, and there will be a meet and greet with Wallace, Gromit, and Feathers McGraw (or, at least, three exhausted interns in costumes). This isn't exactly a kid-friendly experience. Imagine the nightmare of trying to feed a picky child in a restaurant that's inherently unstable, surrounded by giant, emotionless versions of characters they only know from television. This event is clearly geared towards adults who are both fans of Wallace & Gromit (but perhaps not knowledgeable enough to realize gravy isn't central to the franchise) and possess a culinary adventurousness that allows them to indulge in gravy-laden desserts. It's a niche market, to say the least. While the partnership does offer a tenuous connection, considering the climax of the latest Wallace & Gromit film took place on a canal boat and gravy is served in boats, it's a stretch. But is this the best way to honor a national treasure? Bisto must be paying a substantial sum for the image rights, and if that money helps fund more Wallace & Gromit films, it's a positive development. The beauty of Wallace & Gromit lies in their meticulously crafted, yet seemingly effortless, creations. If the gravy influx allows for more time and resources to be dedicated to these productions, it's a win. However, should it not be a cheese-themed restaurant, located on a rocket, with diners being launched through the air into a giant pair of robotic trousers? If you're going to succumb to product placement, at least get the details right. Remember, as Wallace himself once said, “Cracking brand synergy, Gromit!\u201
