One of the last veterans from World War II’s famous Great Escape has died, just days before the 75th anniversary of the audacious breakout. 9News
thJack Lyon, a former Royal Air Force navigator died aged 101 at his home in southern England, reports the BBC.
The daring bid for freedom was the subject of the 1963 film ‘The Great Escape’, starring Steve McQueen. The breakout was the culmination of 15 months’ work under the noses of German guards by 600 allied POWs, building the tunnel, codenamed ‘Harry’. In a 2017 BBC interview, Mr Lyon said he had “no illusions” about his chances of survival had he joined the escapees and made it out the tunnel before being recaptured.
