Max Chandler-Mather’s backdown could clear the way for parliament to pass one of Albanese’s signature policies before an election set to be fought on housing.
Greens housing spokesman Max Chandler-Mather is no longer insisting on a national rent freeze or publicly owned property developer for the party’s support to pass Labor’s stymied housing bill.
But on Tuesday morning, Chandler-Mather softened his position, opening the door to a repeat of the arrangement last year when the Greens backed Labor’s $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund after the government This masthead reported last month that senior Labor figures were privately relaxed about the Greens opposition because it would allow Labor to claim at the election that the minor party was blocking solutions to the housing crunch and the government needed a second term to fix it.Housing Minister Clare O’Neil accused the Greens on Tuesday of playing politics before a parliamentary sitting week in which the government will reintroduce its housing bill.
