Dougie Hampson died hours after leaving a Western NSW hospital. Now his family wants the Attorney-General to help them get answers.
The family of an Aboriginal man, who died just hours after being discharged from a regional hospital, is calling on the NSW Attorney-General to help them find answers.Mr Hampson's family alleges he was sent home from Dubbo Hospital without proper careWARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised this article contains images of a person who has died.
"It beggars belief that in 2022, in a country like Australia, someone as young as my son could be denied proper care at a hospital and subsequently die from a ruptured stomach ulcer," his father Rick Hampson Senior said. Dougie's sister, Anita Chatfield, and his father, Ricky Hampson Senior, hold a photo of Dougie leaving Dubbo Hospital — the last image of him alive.
The family's solicitor and chief executive of the National Justice Project, Professor George Newhouse, said the 2021 inquest into the death of Wiradjuri woman Naomi Williams at Tumut Hospital in the NSW Riverina set an important precedent.
