Three young people were also rushed to hospital following the incident, north west of Melbourne yesterday.
A prison guard's keys were also taken during the incident, which lasted several hours, Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes has confirmed.
A Victoria Police spokesperson said they were called to the incident about 4pm yesterday after receiving reports a "number of youths were involved in an affray" inside the facility. "My information is that they obtained a set of keys for a guard, no staff have been hurt. Police were called to help deal with the incident," Symes said.Symes was unable to confirm the motivation for the incident.Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes confirmed a prison guard's keys was also taken during the incident. "Three young people were injured and there are rumours from within the prison, that one of them is unrecongnisable because the assault was so serious," he said.
"I'd almost guarantee there'll be more unrest, not just in Malmsbury but also in Cherry Creek where they're struggling with staff numbers there, and staff already wanting to leave."Three people were taken to hospital after the riot at the Malmsbury Youth Detention Centre.
