An urban planning think-tank has released its vision for a new northside CBD, but it is dependent on a major piece of infrastructure being built.
Gympie Road as a tree-lined boulevard with dedicated mass transit lanes in a pedestrian-friendly environment is central to a new vision of Chermside as an “alternative CBD” for Brisbane. But urban planning think tank Suburban Futures’ concept for the northside business hub depends on one major thing: the Gympie Road bypass tunnel going ahead.
“What we’re basically saying is, what if the Chermside employment market got to 40,000 or 50,000? What is that going to look like on the surface?” “Assuming they can get the traffic out of Chermside, there’s vast potential there to achieve the other aims of the report – no doubt about that – because you’ve got a good base fabric there, in terms of a retail economy, a health economy and options for active transport.”
