Detained Australian journalist Cheng Lei has been freed from a Beijing prison and reunited with her family in Melbourne, in a big concession by China to repair diplomatic ties with Canberra. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced today that Cheng had returned to Australia. Albanese spoke briefly to Cheng, who has requested privacy.
“This is an outcome the Australian government has been seeking for a long period of time,” Albanese said. “Her return will be welcomed by all her family and friends.” Cheng, a TV journalist working for Chinese state media, was detained on unknown national security charges in August 2020, and tried in secret. Her detention was widely regarded as a case of hostage diplomacy, amid a deterioration in the bilateral relationship under the previous Coalition government.
