Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has dismissed concerns of the cost of the Greens’ 75 per cent 2030 emissions reduction target in a tense back and forth interview on Sky News Australia.

The government is set to pass its Climate Change Bill – which includes its 43 per cent 2030 target – this week in the Senate.

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has again pushed for the government to ban new fossil fuel projects in an interview with Sky News Australia's Tom Connell. “It’s more about what it’s going to cost if we don’t start dealing with climate change and reducing the carbon pollution,” Senator Hanson-Young told Sky News Australia on Monday.

She was pressed again by Sky News Australia’s Tom Connell on the cost of the transition and said: “What do you mean by cost”. This would involve the development, operation, maintenance and storage needed and does not take into consideration the required investment into the renewable sector to meet Australia’s energy demands.

“At this point what we’ve got is billions of dollars being spent making climate change worse that is crazy,” she said.which would amend the existing Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act to ensure emissions reductions are considered when governments approve new projects.

Environment laws ‘need a climate trigger’: Hanson-YoungEnvironment laws ‘need a climate trigger’: Hanson-YoungIt is the government’s responsibility to consider the cost of transitioning to renewable energy in its budget, according to Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young. “We need the government now to be sending a signal to all of the departments that to meet these goals, it has to be cross-governmental,” she told Sky News Australia. She said “one of the best ways” to fund the transition would be to stop subsidising fossil fuel companies. “We need to stop opening up new coal and gas, we need a climate trigger in our new environmental laws. “At this point what we’ve got is billions of dollars being spent making climate change worse.
