ANALYSIS: Has COVID-19 shelved the NZ-Aussie 'sibling rivalry'?
Ruth Stokes from the Queenstown Chamber of Commerce said the town had "taken a hit for the greater good" during COVID, and now it was about "welcoming the Australians with open arms".
Until the 2020 season, Australians accounted for about 40 per cent of the visitors to Queenstown's slopes during ski season. Operators here know they'll have to compete for tourism spend with domestic destinations in Australia, and they're trying to lure Australian staff over too. One local business leader said, "we're like siblings, there's rivalry, but in a time like this, we come together"."As strange as that may sound, we welcome that twang," Ms Stokes said.
