More than 100 hectares was among the hazard reduction burns intoday after heavy rainfall and floods supercharged the growth of vegetation, which has exacerbated the fire threat.

"People have obviously been very focused on floods - we now need to shift that back to fire," Rural Fire Service commissioner Rob Rogers said.Fire crews across NSW are now ramping up controlled burns ahead of what is expected to be the worst bushfire season in 20 years. "We are seeing frost now going across the landscape that's killing all that grass making it more ready to burn.

"We have got to do this work because if we don't, potentially we'll pay the price for it in the summer." La Niña's years of wet weather has made life difficult for crews, who are only at 20 per cent of their burning program.Areas which did not burn during the 2019-2020 Black Summer fires are among those at greatest risk, including Greater Sydney, Central Coast, Illawarra and grassland west of the Great Dividing Range.
