MotoGP: Francesco Bagnaia has claimed his third successive MotoGP Italian Grand Prix victory after charging to victory in Tuscany.
The speaker? Valentino Rossi . The subject? Marc Marquez . And while Rossi speaking on Marquez is always newsworthy, the timing of this quip is why MotoGP in 2025 is set to be more box-office than ever.Marquez had completed a devilish rider market power flex
“Rossi’s quote after the battle at Jerez feels even more pertinent now they’re going to be teammates next year. I’m sure that’s going to be ringing in Pecco’s ears.” Negotiating a release from the final year of his Honda contract – and surrendering an eight-figure salary to ride a year-old Ducati GP23 at the satellite Gresini team for this season – was a bet on himself. It’s one that he knew, Birt feels, had come up trumps as early as the post-season test at Valencia last November.
“He’s said in interviews that this is his ‘second life’, and he’s taking advantage of that,” Birt says. As does making life uncomfortable for Bagnaia, the most successful pupil to emerge from Rossi’s renowned rider academy in Italy. For the past two seasons, Bagnaia has had things the way he wants them. After chasing down Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo to win the 2022 title, the Italian held off a rapid but error-prone Martin 12 months later to repeat the feat.
“Pecco will know the history between Marc and Valentino, and I’m sure there’s been conversations between the master and his star pupil … I’m sure Rossi has said ‘look, this guy is going to try to mess you around’, because that’s what Marc does to his teammates. The ripple effects of Marquez’s “not an option” rider market grenade are still being felt. Within days of Aprilia signing Martin, incumbent Aprilia rider Maverick Vinales jumped ship to Tech3 KTM to become teammates with Bastianini, whose seat Marquez had taken alongside Bagnaia.
