The image was a culmination of three years of research to recreate photos of Civil War participants with their descendants.
‘Alice and her daughter Frieda sit in the parking lot. Alice knows what other parents judge her for – being a mother who can’t get her child to school. Frieda, now eight, has autism and is one of the thousands of children in Australia experiencing “school refusal”, also known as “school can’t” – children who have difficulty attending school due to emotional distress. For parents, it’s a nightmare that can result in broken careers, fear of kids missing out and threats of fines.
‘Teenage boys experience all kinds of feelings. Whether they live in Myanmar like these two boys in the photo or elsewhere, they are challenged with the same problems and how to talk about them. One way to avoid the issues and gain self-confidence is to look cool and hang out in a cool car.’
