A widespread heatwave has large parts of the country's interior expected to reach highs of above 40 degrees Celsius on Monday.

CFA chief fire officer Jason Heffernan told ABC News Breakfast extreme fire dangers were a concern for fire authorities today across much of the state. He said the RFS was monitoring thunderstorm activity around the Hunter Valley, particularly around Laguna and Bulga where there were lightning strikes overnight.

Mr Narramore said the inland areas were not expected to be as windy but they could still reach peaks of 50 to 60kph. Severe to low-intensity heatwave conditions remain through parts of the Pilbara and north-western WA.
