One of the most iconic churches in France, Notre Dame de Paris , burned for eight straight hours before a team of 400 French firefighters were able to tame the blaze.
More than 400 firemen were needed to tame the inferno that consumed the roof and brought down the spire of the eight-centuries-old cathedral. They worked through the night to bring the fire under control some 14 hours after it began. In 1431, when Henry VI of England was crowned King of France during the Hundred Years’ War, he chose to conduct the ceremony at Notre Dame.
Victor Hugo, one of France’s greatest novelists, published the novel ‘The Hunchback of Notre-Dame’ in 1831, immortalising the cathedral in literary canon.
