Even with a bigger field size and harder standards, more than 3,000 runners were shut out.
That leaves out 3,161 runners out of 27,288 who applied for the race next April.
Even after the the race tightened qualifying times for the 2020 event, making them 5 minutes faster for every age group, the race had to turn away applicants who had met their new, stricter qualifying mark. If space remains in the field—as it did this year—registration continues the following Monday for all runners who had met their time standard. Some who made last-minute qualifying attempts at marathons on September 14 and 15 were able to register with times earned at those races.
