Hidden behind a tropical garden in the affluent Auckland suburb of Mount Eden is a subterranean secret – a cave opening from the ground like the yawning mouth of a giant. Roughly 200 caves, formed by volcanic eruptions , lie beneath New Zealand ’s largest city. These caves have a rich history, from housing a secret printing press to serving as a widow’s shelter . Steps are being taken to protect these ‘sacred’ sites.

One cave, owned by Sean Jacob, is 106 metres long and five metres at its highest point. Inside, there is a tunnel that leads to a lofty area called the ‘ballroom’, which is filled with golden minerals. Beyond the ‘ballroom’ is another chamber that can be accessed through a 10-metre crawl space
