Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defence Forces, was killed in an explosion in Moscow. The incident, believed to be a rare assassination of a prominent military official in Russia, involved a device planted on a scooter near the entrance to a residential apartment block. Kirillov had been sentenced in absentia by a Ukrainian court for the use of banned chemical weapons during the war in Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Security Service, the SBU, said that they had recorded more than 4800 uses of chemical weapons on the battlefield since February 2022, particularly K-1 combat grenades. Photographs posted on Russian Telegram channels showed a shattered entrance to a building littered with rubble and two bodies lying in the blood-stained snow.Russia’s radioactive, chemical and biological defence troops, known as RKhBZ, are special forces who operate under conditions of radioactive, chemical and biological contamination.
