The oldest boat ever to compete in the Sydney Hobart, Maritimo Katwinchar, is making her third attempt after a major restoration.

Maritimo Katwinchar, the oldest boat in the Sydney Hobart yacht race history, will make her third attempt after undergoing significant modifications. The boat, built in 1904 by workers at an English brewery using off-cuts of timber, was found in a dilapidated state on Gumtree and underwent a 14,000-hour restoration. Katwinchar, named after the three daughters of the brewery owner, has a rich history, competing in the Sydney to Hobart race since 1951.

Now, she returns as a double-hander for her third attempt, co-skippered by 45-time Sydney Hobart veteran Michael Spies and Peter Vaicuirgis. Spies built the new carbon fibre mast himself, working almost full-time on Katwinchar for six months to prepare her for the race
