President Joe Biden and Democrats hope the 'historic' spending package will boost their popularity with voters ahead of the November elections.
US President Joe Biden has signed a landmark climate change and healthcare bill into law, delivering what he called the "final piece" of his pared-down domestic agenda.
Mr Biden's initial 10-year, $US3.5 trillion proposal also envisioned free pre-kindergarten, paid family and medical leave, expanded Medicare benefits, and eased immigration restrictions. But that plan was derailed when Joe Manchin, a Democratic member of the evenly-divided Senate, said he would vote against it because it was too costly.
"Joe, we never had a doubt," Mr Biden told Senator Manchin at a White House event attended by Democratic leaders.Democrats hailed the legislation as a once-in-a-generation investment in addressing the long-term effects of climate change, as well as drought in the nation's west.
