Hobart has become the first capital city in the nation to ban single-use plastics, including takeaway food containers and straws. City of Hobart councillors voted on Monday night in favour of a by-law to support the ban and impose fines on those that don't comply.

Food retailers will need to provide compostable products from December 2020 or face on-the-spot fines exceeding $300, which increases to $1,300 if prosecuted. The increased costs to businesses, which is estimated to be between eight to 12 cents more per container, is expected to be passed on to consumers.
