New South Wales Emergency Services Minister David Elliott has returned home early from a European holiday as the bushfire crisis grips his state.
Mr Elliott called his absence during the unprecedented bushfire season “inexcusable” — and admitted he should have put his Rural Fire Service family first.
Mr Elliot has been highly criticised for travelling overseas during the disaster just weeks after Prime Minister Scott Morrison was condemned for taking a family holiday in Hawaii. Image: News Corp Australia

If you are in a high-risk area leave now: Berejiklian | Sky News AustraliaNSW premier Gladys Berejiklian and RFS deputy commissioner Rob Rogers has urged residents in the south coast from Nowra down to leave the area ahead of this weekend’s severe fire conditions.\n\nPremier Berejiklian said motorists will be able to leave via the Princess Highway.\n\n“There is a window until tonight for people to get out and we encourage them to do so, please do not stay in the area unless you absolutely have to,” she said.\n\nMr Rogers warned that anyone who stays must be prepared for the potential consequences.\n\n“If you ring, make sure you understand that you are likely to be stuck there for some time and the last thing you should do is suddenly change your mind at the last minute,” he said. \n\nUnfortunately, we have seen people caught in cars and that is fatal. Been caught in a car is only slightly better than being caught on foot. Cars are not safe places to be”.\n\nHe said its likely homes will be lost, but authorities will consider the operation to be a success if no lives are lost on Saturday.\n\nA seven-day State of Emergency has been declared in NSW- the third in just eight weeks.\n\nEight people have died and 449 homes been destroyed since January 1st.\n
