NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian and RFS deputy commissioner Rob Rogers has urged residents in the south coast from Nowra down to leave the area ahead of this weekend’s severe fire conditions. Premier Berejiklian said motorists will be able to leave via the Princess Highway. “There is a window until tonight for people to get out and we encourage them to do so, please do not stay in the area unless you absolutely have to,” she said.
“If you ring, make sure you understand that you are likely to be stuck there for some time and the last thing you should do is suddenly change your mind at the last minute,” he said. Unfortunately, we have seen people caught in cars and that is fatal. Been caught in a car is only slightly better than being caught on foot. Cars are not safe places to be”. He said its likely homes will be lost, but authorities will consider the operation to be a success if no lives are lost on Saturday.
