The BBC's popular daytime programme featured an unusual story in a four-storey townhouse.
Homes Under the Hammer presenter Martin Roberts was left surprised after finding a tenant in the basement of a £199,000 property on the market. The host of the BBC's popular daytime programme visited a four-storey townhouse in Newport, which included a basement level accommodation.
Impressed with the size and ceiling height of some of the rooms, Martin viewed the home as a good prospect initially. He said: "It's a grand building with some grand opportunities presenting themselves." But things took a turn for the worse as Martin climbed the period staircase to the next floor and spotted the incredibly dated electrics, Wales Online reports.
"The higher up the house you get, the less renovated it appears, it's charming in its own way but very, very dated, and you don't have to be a rocket scientist or even an electrician to work out that this with its Bakelite switches and its old fashioned fuses is a very old electrical system."You'd probably want to replace the electrics anyway but it gives an indication that probably the rest of this building hasn't been touched for a very long time.
Options for the house included a large family home, a flat conversion or even a HMO , but there was one further surprise in the form of a paying tenant in the basement.
Decody, who owned a takeaway in Bristol, and Cherylyn, who was a foster carer, spotted the Newport period townhouse going under the hammer for a guide price of £199k and secured it for £200k as an investment for the family, with the plan to transform it into an HMO of six bedrooms, some with an ensuite, kitchen, bathroom and a lounge, and leaving the basement as a tenanted flat.
