My father went berserk and admitted his obsessive control of my mother. My ex-partner stalked me and attacked me. But doctors and police just wouldn’t listen.

It’s October 1963, and it is the start of my father’s first therapy session as an in-patient in St Vincent’s psychiatric unit.

My mother later tells me that my father would warn her not to fall asleep, as she would not wake up. Night after night. All to keep her terrified and too scared to leave. While she was pregnant. Every time I try to end the relationship he sits in his car outside my house, ringing and texting, then banging on the door. I try not to give in and often hold out for a few weeks. But his hounding, stalking, pleading and threats wear me down.He tells me that if I break up with him he will always find me because he has a private investigator’s licence, and a shotgun.

The police prosecutor speaks to me before the hearing. He tells me the other party has now explained everything to him. Obviously, I have overreacted. Surely, I don’t want to go through with it – the hearing, the intervention order. The judge takes five minutes to issue a 12-month intervention order. My ex-partner must now legally stay away from me.I step out of my local supermarket and there he is, standing next to his car, smiling at me. He lives nearly 30 kilometres away.

So, we remain in abusive relationships, exhausted from desperately screaming into the deaf ears of those who fail to hear us.
