A cluster of mysterious horse deaths across Victoria has prompted veterinarians to conduct urgent tests to find out the cause of the disease believed to be killing them. 7NEWS
Both the Hendra virus and anthrax have been ruled out as the cause and while a toxin in feed has been considered, there have been horses out at pasture who have been struck down.“This thing is cruel. It’s really cruel and you’ve got other sicks ones and you’ve just got to keep going,” she said.
The cause of the deadly disease is not yet known, but one of the concerns is how quickly the animals deteriorate.Vets have urged horse owners to monitor their animals for changes and check their temperatures. “As this is early days, every report will help us understand the situation and assist our investigation into finding the cause,’ Victoria’s Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Graeme Cooke said.Credit:“Early assessment and collection of a range of samples is important to this type of investigation.
