A Canberra man who allegedly posed as an ASIO employee and falsely obtained more than $700,000 from a contact will face hundreds of charges in the ACT Magistrates Court later this month.
Jeremiah Deakin, 30, from Red Hill, has been charged with 156 counts of obtaining property by deception and 78 counts of false representation of a Commonwealth official between 2016 and 2018. ACT police allege between 2016 and 2018, Mr Deakin obtained the six-figure funds from a person he knew, "through various deceptive means, including falsely representing himself to be an employee of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation".
In a statement, ACT Policing said multiple search warrants had been issued during the investigation, including one at the man's home in February. As a result of these searches, officers said they seized a Mitsubishi Triton utility vehicle and three horses under the Confiscation of Criminal Assets Act 2003.Because of the high number of charges requiring a response, Mr Deakin's solicitor was this morning granted an adjournment of four weeks by the ACT Magistrates Court.
