that will create walking and biking trails, parks, ball fields, entertainment venues and even affordable housing for those neighborhoods, extending the Buffalo Bayou Park several miles to the east on land they've been quietly accumulating since 2004.
The Kinders, who founded their Kinder Foundation in 1997, have vowed to give 95 percent of their wealth to charitable causes. Rich Kinder, a founder of Kinder Morgan — the largest pipeline company in the U.S. — is No. 128 on the 2021 Forbes 400 list and has a net worth of $7.1 billion. For the $100 million gift, the Kinders called Anne Olson, president of the Buffalo Bayou Partnership and asked her to come by for a conversation.
From there, the Kinders shifted to helping Buffalo Bayou Park, Memorial Park, Bayou Greenways, Hermann Park, Trees for Houston and smaller green spaces such as Emancipation Park, Willow Waterhole and some 50 SPARK parks at area schools. Farther east is an area known as Turkey Bend, where the partnership now owns land that holds a decrepit wharf, a graffiti-covered warehouse and an inactive industrial building. Today it's a grim-looking site, but she sees it someday becoming bayou-front boardwalk and entertainment complex.
In mid-October, Olson and her team expect to break ground on the first element of Buffalo Bayou East, an 80-unit affordable housing project, that hasn’t officially been named but is going by the term “Lockwood South.”
