The one-time oncology nurse in the Texas Medical Center is getting used to the spotlight;...

“I thought it was really cool that he is Vietnamese. He represents our culture. My dad also really likes that there’s someone Vietnamese up and coming, says Denise Huynh, 19, a student at the University of Houston’s main campus. She came from school with another friend to meet Keshi.

The local appearance was Cactus Music’s first in-store since COVID brought things to a halt more than two years ago. Owner Quinn Bishop thinks Keshi “will be regarded as an influential and culturally impactful artist.” He was impressed with the turnout and had to order more product to meet the demand.

The album is indeed a shift from his previous work, which showcased a gentler, dreamier persona. He’s more aggressive here, particularly on opener “Get It,” from the bragging lyrics to the delivery. It’s a hip-hop track that was directly influenced by Houston’s chopped and screwed sound. That immediately recognizable effect pops up throughout the album.

When he walked into view at Cactus, he was greeted by a chorus of shrieks. Some fans looked like they were on the verge of tears. More than one girl’s fingers trembled as they joined his to make a heart for photos. Keshi is engaged and kind with every person.
