The rules kept changing, and festival-goers - including one with COVID-19 - claim safety breaches and a communication breakdown put the community at risk.
Health officials are unable to say how many COVID-19 cases are linked to a south-east Queensland music festival that became a close contact site and been described by attendees as a “superspreader event”.
The festival in Kingaham, inland from the Sunshine Coast, attracted hundreds of people from several states and has been listed as a close contact site for three of its four days - December 17-19. Another attendee said: “At no point [was I] asked to check in with a QR code, they didn’t even ask for ID when I got there. I have personally spoken to three people who I interacted with at the festival who have now tested positive. I know of at least 15 people in outer circles who have tested positive.”
“We engaged a security company to check all entrants for vaccination status from the time the mandates came into effect. Many people were either refused entry or sent back to a location where they could access Wi-Fi to download their certificates before they were allowed to enter.”Instagram - @elements_festival_
“Queensland Health later identified the event as a casual contact site. A total of 17 police officers were identified as having attended the event or were involved in enforcement action in proximity to the event. The officers were advised to undertake a COVID test and isolate until negative results were obtained. All officers have since returned to duty without issue.
