Volunteers are recreating habitat for the fish along Oolong Creek in a bid to boost southern pygmy perch numbers.
They have been found in waterways at Holbrook and Tumbarumba as well as the catchment around the Oolong Creek.
"We're recreating the habitat the fish love, removing woody weeds and planting the creek banks up with native trees and shrubs, it's a form of rehabilitation," Ms Heffernan said. "Currently, the fish are endangered and the next step up is critically endangered which means they're almost lost."The decline in southern pygmy perch has been due to the loss of habitat and the threat of carp and redfin.
Fish ecologist associate professor Mark Lintermans said more translocations of the fish are expected in coming years.
