A shift from the ideological to the practical

And Darren Chester, a significant internal critic of former leader Barnaby Joyce, got a 4 per cent swing in Gippsland, an electorate that suffered extensive bushfire damage in this term."But it's not ideological. People want to see more asset protection around our towns.
"We held a forum with flood survivors," he recalls. "People were just trying to plan and make decisions. They had moved on from the value signalling, ideology issue, to a very practical mode, of, 'how do we practically respond, do I rebuild, how can I protect myself'. It was a very visceral thing." "That's the problem for people like Matt Canavan and Barnaby Joyce. You can't say something on one end of the country and expect that it won't be heard anywhere else."
