Amid rising inflation and interest rates and stubbornly high prices for flights, the number of Australian residents travelling overseas has yet to return to pre-pandemic levels. But some countries are getting more Australian visitors than others.

According to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures released on Wednesday, the number of Australian residents taking short-term trips in April was 18.1 per cent lower than the pre-COVID level in April 2019.

Business travellers, people visiting friends and families and home-owners without a mortgage were travelling just as much as ever, he said. Lachie said he and Chantelle were glad they ended up going to Fiji and particularly enjoyed the people and how welcoming and kind they were.Other travellers spoken to by the ABC cited the convenience of the short flights, the range of tourism offerings from budget to extravagant, family connections and the sheer friendliness of the Fijian people.

"Worse yet, the government's ongoing low wage offers to APS [Australian public servants] are likely to see us continually falling behind in real terms," said the Canberra resident, who asked to remain anonymous due to rules against public servants talking to the media. Her husband was also unexpectedly out of work for about six weeks after losing his job in the construction industry.
