Australia's first trial to convert waste into energy gold has begun. 9News

Australia's first trial to convert waste into energy gold has begun at Sydney Water's Malabar Wastewater Resource Recovery Plant.

"It is a constant stream, we're all flushing our toilets every day, we're producing gas every day it's the same as taking it out of the ground or out of the sea it's a constant source," Sydney Water general manager Paul Plowman said. The way it works is biosolids are extracted from wastewater, including what you flush down the toilet, and converted into biogas which is a mixture of gases, including methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide.

It's hoped by 2030, 13,000 Sydney homes will be using green gas created through the conversion of wastewater to power.
