Australia is decades behind others in pursuing offshore wind, but a growing number of multinational companies with deep pockets are pushing ahead with the zero emission projects.

The Star of the South project – backed by a mix of local investors, Danish powerhouse Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, and superannuation company Cbus – is on course to be Australia’s first offshore wind project. Once installed, the blades of the turbine spin with the wind, which turns a gearbox and a generator housed at the top of the tower. This converts kinetic energy into electricity, which then travels down the tower and through transmission cables laid on the ocean floor via an offshore substation. Once the electricity reaches land, it connects to transmission lines to plug into Australia’s grid.
