Should Ohio State take three or four wideouts each recruiting class?
Still, the Buckeyes have recruited at a level where it’s safe to assume, wild as it may seem, that a future first-round wide receiver is in every recruiting class. Harrison and Egbuka were in the recruiting class of 2021. Jaxon Smith-Njigba was in the class of 2020. Garrett Wilson was in the class of 2019. Chris Olave was in the class of 2018.
You have to go all the way back to 2017 — and, in reality, the 2016 season when taken into consideration when that class was recruited — to find a time when a future first-round wide receiver wasn’t in Ohio State’s recruiting class. That was a time when Urban Meyer was in his fifth year as head coach. The offensive coordinators were Ed Warinner and Tim Beck. Ryan Day was the quarterbacks coach for the 49ers.
Four-star Chance Robinson was at Ohio State’s game against Western Kentucky, signifying that the Buckeyes might be interested in trying to flip the current Miami commit. If they do so, they’d be solidifying their class with four players ranked from first to 151st in the recruiting rankings. And, long-term, they’d be solidifying their depth.
But there’s always a cost of doing business, and having a receiver room with four commitments each year might be too much to navigate — both in terms of keeping the class together, and making sure that scholarships are not overloaded at one position. It’s a tightrope act that Ohio State’s staff will have to consider over the next few weeks as signing day ticks down under three months. There’s not an easy answer, but no matter the end result, it’s safe to assume that Ohio State’s success at wideout will continue.
