Figures show many 18 year-olds could be called-up from 2029 if the Tories win the General Election
Almost 40,000 teenagers in Greater Manchester could be ordered to join the armed forces or carry out voluntary work under Rishi Sunak’s plan to bring back compulsory national service.

The borough which, based on current figures, is likely to provide the biggest proportion of its population, is Trafford. There are currently 3,684 youngsters there who will be 18 in 2029, 1.5pc of its population.
But in 2029, 18-year-olds will make up a higher proportion of the population of Barking and Dagenham than anywhere else. They have said royal children would be expected to take part. In other countries that have national service, exemptions are mostly granted on medical grounds. However, they are also sometimes granted to university students, only sons, single parents or professional athletes.
