Government's rezoning doubles its own bill for acquired West Gate tunnel land
A developer that bought land in Altona North next to the West Gate Freeway for $8.7 million in 2017 more than doubled their money after the Andrews government rezoned the site – and then acquired the land at a higher price.
In September 2018, the government rezoned the land to a “comprehensive development zone” – dramatically increasing its value, even though the land was set aside for open space. Development firm 94 Feet is a major shareholder in the company that owns the land. The company’s Dean Rzechta declined to comment because the case was before the courts. The government acquired the land so it could stockpile thousands of tonnes of soil – contaminated with asbestos and poly-fluoroalkyl chemicals, also known as PFAS – being dug up for construction of the West Gate Tunnel.
