Charged with merging lithium producers Orocobre and Galaxy Resources into a unified company, Allkem’s Martin Perez De Solay has plenty of experience managing a growing family.

“That year was fully devoted to Matias. I was working, but most of the time was spending time with Matias and the family, because there was a need for that,” he recalls. The merger created a company with rare exposure to the world’s two major lithium production regions and the industry’s two major production methods, thereby giving Allkem both geographic and product diversification.While Orocobre technically acquired Galaxy under the $4 billion “merger”, Perez de Solay says the rebranding to become Allkem is designed to ensure the company’s two disparate tribes feel united.
Yet analysts such as Canaccord’s Reg Spencer believe demand will continue to outstrip supply for at least the next six months, potentially pushing prices even higher. By adding lithium hydroxide to its existing product suite of Argentinian lithium carbonate and Australian spodumene concentrate, Allkem will have greater protection against the battery industry’s rapidly changing preferences, and the ability to seize on price arbitrages between the different lithium products.“We want to build a company that has the ability to change from one [lithium product] to the other easily,” says Perez de Solay.
Despite being listed in Australia, Perez de Solay will be based in Buenos Aires in recognition that Allkem’s flagship asset, Olaroz, is in Argentina.
