In March this year, 52-year-old Alison White had a stroke which impacted a part of the brain that plays a key role in movement, speech and emotion. So, she turned to Jane Austen.

Common signs of a stroke can include a person's face drooping on one side, the inability to lift both arms above their head, and slurred speech.About eight in 10 strokes are preventable and doctors say a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk.

Ms White progressed from laboriously transcribing pages of the book, to touch-typing her own account of her stroke. But more research is needed to determine other possible reasons for the increase in strokes among this age group, like Ms White."A lot of the risk factors, things like smoking, alcohol, I don't have either of those in my life."

''What we find is that often people don't notice themselves and it's somebody that's standing next to them, a family members, carer a colleague, who says 'Hey you're slurring your words, your face is dropping on one side','' Dr Murphy said. "So there are many, many hidden effects of stroke, as well as the more visual things like paralysis down one side."

"National targets currently say that we should be able to give intravenous medication for clot busting within 60 minutes, and to have started the clot retrieval procedure within 90 minutes of coming to the door,'' Dr Piechowski-Jozwiak said. But getting to hospital as quickly as you can is important for recovery as well.
