How ‘unprecedented turmoil and instability’ led to crisis at Shore | JordsBaker

Dr John Collier led schools for more than 30 years, and worked in them for 50. When he retired from St Andrews Cathedral School last December, he moved on to more peaceful life as an academic at a theological college. That peace ended abruptly this week.

“I can assure you that this decision has only been made following deep deliberation and thorough assessment of the school’s situation,” wrote the council’s chairman Bay Warburton, a one-time chief of staff to former premier Mike Baird, in a letter to parents.Pressure from staff and old boys is now mounting on the school’s council, whose key job is to choose the principal, to explain why it backed the status quo for so long despite the concerns of many teachers, old boys and parents.

He did meet a key criterion for a Sydney Anglican school head, which is to subscribe to the city’s brand of the faith – a type that is more evangelical and socially conservative than that of other dioceses. Some parents say the school has become more religious. The Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, Kanishka Raffel, whose role as president of the council is usually ceremonial, was approached to intervene.

She held interviews, ran anonymous surveys of staff, and took submissions, with advisers to help her understand the context of Anglican schools. They included former Sydney archbishop Glenn Davies.
