Democracy Manifest was the term used by an Australian man as he was thrown into a police vehicle in the 1990s. But the horse’s form, and colourful race calls, are creating a cult hero.
The owners of a horse whose name was inspired by a viral video of a Brisbane arrest more than 30 years ago admit they weren’t even sure the moniker would be accepted by authorities.
With television cameras in place to cover the arrest, Edwards says: “What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal?”It took almost 20 years for the footage to surface online, and the bizarre rant has been watched more than one million times since, prompting owner-breeder Daniel Allam to name a horse Democracy Manifest.
Democracy Manifest qualified for the Wellington Boot and won two of his first four starts before Nestor handed back his training licence, prompting Allam to transfer the three-year-old to Chris Waller in Sydney. “That race call was just shared everywhere and was how he got his cult following. People were just ringing us. When they’re fast, that’s when people recognise them. If they’re slow, you wouldn’t know.”Asked about the name, Steve said: “When Daniel did it I said to him, ‘Why would you want to call a horse that?’ But I think he’s had a little bit of a cult following now.”
