Travel back, to the days before Kate Moss was wearing them.

unexpected rise to becoming a cool festival-girl staple certainly didn’t happen overnight.

The Wellington boot’s origin story dates as far back as the 1790s. It’s a derivative of the Hessian boot, a knee-high leather shoe with a stacked heel and front tassel worn by officers in the British army. One of the first public figures to begin wearing them was Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, who was a leading military and political figure in Britain at the time.

Several brands now continue to specialise in the Wellington boot, all keeping its original intent – to stay dry! – alive. Hunter still leads the pack, though brands such as Aigle, Ilse Jacobsen, and Joules have all made the style their bread and butter . Glastonbury, which began in 1970, is hosted on Worthy Farm and can famously get quite muddy. Show-goers slowly began wearing them for practical reasons. When Moss and more fashion-forward guests started rocking Wellies at Glastonbury in the 2000s and early 2010s, however, the shoes quickly transformed into being more of a trendy item. A ripple effect occurred slowly, but steadily, in the fashion industry.

The craze for Wellies hasn’t died down yet. You’ll find many festival-goers rocking them again this year. In fact, every year after the music stops and the festival clears out, thousands of Wellington boots are left behind, littering the fields of the festival . It’s the shoe that simply won’t quit – and you can thank Kate Moss for that.
