i reveals that Government failed to seek advice from Network Rail or HS2 Ltd on plans to cut northern leg
But buried in the small print of the decision is the demand from the Department for Transport [DfT] to find as much as £9bn in additional savings from the London to Birmingham stretch. Industry insiders have warned that major re-scoping works to the initial phase of the rail line will require significant sections of the project going back to the drawing board, with the likes of Curzon Street station in Birmingham being dramatically pared back to make cutbacks.
“They could try and redesign Curzon Street, which was meant to have seven platforms, but because the line will no longer run north to Manchester, it might need just three or four platforms. This would leave it with a lot of empty space, however,” Mr Barter said. “If the Government goes ahead with lifting safeguards on the land it has already purchased for the later phases, then that can only be seen as a scorched earth policy,” he said.Meanwhile, HS2 insiders have told i that Mr Sunak’s changes to HS2 could cause further delays to the project, amid contracting concerns and new private development.
