Emergency services battled the blaze for more than four hours and at one point had to retreat out of fear the building would collapse around them.
Emergency crews arrived at about 10:30pm Monday to find a building engulfed in flames and billowing thick smoke.
Apartments on either side of the building were evacuated, with 20 people forced to leave their homes, and Parramatta Road was closed in both directions while firefighters worked to control the blaze. Fire crews used power tools to enter the building and required breathing apparatus due to heavy smoke. Picture: Sydney Emergency via Facebook
It took 10 fire trucks and 40 firefighters more than four hours to put out the blaze, with authorities announcing the operation had been successful just after 4:15am.
